We have extensive experience providing bird proofing for historic and listed buildings. We work with a number of high profile clients including:

  • The National Trust
  • City and Town Councils
  • Diocese’s
  • Architectural Companies

Some of our most challenging and complex bird netting system installations have been to buildings of historical significance where we have worked with planning authorities under strict criteria on our installations on listed buildings.  On every project we have met these requirements, working with our clients to bring new and innovative solutions that have involved redesigning net installations to be fitted without fixings using specially designed and fabricated brackets.

We have even found unique ways to overcome planning restrictions on the heights of nets, but yet still install them with total access for maintenance personnel.  Examples of some of our projects such as The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and The National Trusts Avebury Museum can be seen on our Projects page.

All Birdteq staff are CSCS card holders and access trained with IPAF and PASMA.  Our staff are regularly trained in asbestos awareness, hand and power tool usage, working at height and related health and safety.

Birdteq is safety accredited with CHAS and trade accredited with the National Pest Technicians Association.

Further examples of some of our bird proofing installations can be seen on our Projects page.

Birdteq has also completed bird proofing installations on many churches as seen on our Projects page.

Case Study

National Trust Museum -Avebury, Wiltshire

This grade II listed building had recently had a new thatched roof installed at a cost of £100.00.00, unfortunately the resident Jackdaw population took a liking to the new straw thatch and started to pluck out strips of straw.  At first this seemed like a minor problem, however, after several months of this behaviour the roof was becoming severely damaged.  Areas of the roof had large piles of loose straw strewn across it.  The thatch roof had been covered with chicken wire but the Jackdaws were still able to pluck at the straw.  Decoy dummy birds of prey were put up, but merely ignored by the birds.

Birdteq were called to find a solution to stop the roof destruction.

Jackdaws are part of the corvid family,  all corvid’s are highly intelligent birds and can overcome most deterrent scaring devices.  We initially spent time observing the Jackdaws pattern of behaviour and noticed that the birds would fly in, a few at a time, land on the thatch and pluck out a strip of straw but interestingly they would not fly off with the it but simply place it on the roof.  The birds seemed to be copying each other with this behaviour.  So we established that the birds weren’t looking for insects in the thatch nor using it for nesting material.  Exactly why they were doing this remains unsolved, it may of been that they were simply liked doing it!

We decided that the best course of action would be to create a physical barrier to stop the Jackdaws getting to the roof.  The solution we advised our client was to have a bird net system installed.  This was agreed upon so long  as no fixings were installed into the buildings wall fabric, due to it’s grade II listed status.

There was also one other major thing we had to consider, how to design a net bracket that could rest on the thatch without disturbing it and still be strong enough to raise the bird netting above the roof.  We came up with a bracket design and had them fabricated.

Once all the net brackets and tensioned wire rope was installed, we fitted the netting one side at a time.  The installation was carried out off a MEWP (mobile eleveted work platform).

The bird net installation has been very successful and the thatch roof remains untouched by the Jackdaws.
